Organised by the HAA in association with Windrushers Gliding Club who now operate the former RAF Bicester airfield, the HAA GLIDING DAY will give members and guests the chance to experience soaring flight from one of the last pre-war style, ‘into wind’ all-grass airfields in the UK.
The charge of £35 per person includes three dual winch launched flights. Additional launches or airtows are available at the club’s normal rates. There will be a buffet supper and a bar on the airfield (after flying!) Accommodation is available if required.
The former RAF Bicester, once home to Bristol Blenheim light bombers, has for the past 60 years been almost solely used for gliding. As such it has never needed asphalt runways and therefore remains one of the last pure all-grass aerodromes in the UK with no marked runways and period wartime buildings offering a unique ‘timewarp’ environment,
The HAA gliding event is being run by Windrushers Gliding Club, who operate the airfield. Day membership of the club is included in the fee, which will be payable on the day. In addition to club gliders, some Windrushers members may, if conditions allow, offer us a chance to fly in their classic open-cockpit Slingsby T-21s.
HAA members are invited to fly in with appropriate types*. Maximum take-off/landing distance is around 1100 metres. All powered aircraft movements are STRICTLY PPR and only following a briefing from Windrushers Gliding Club.
Further details will be forwarded to those who register. If weather precludes flying on 7th May we will reschedule to a later date. Updates will be posted on this website.
Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come first served basis. Please register your intent either by e-mail to Carol de Solla Atkin at [email protected] or print off and post a copy of the pdf form to: 2 Devon Mead, Hatfield Aerodrome, Herts. AL10 9GD.
