HAA members and guests are invited to fly in or visit by road, to see Gerry Cooper’s aircraft restoration activities, including the stunning Hawker Tempest II and the unique WWI replica DH-2 fighter, followed by a visit to the aerodrome museum.
The latest in our series of members’ ‘behind the scenes’ events takes us to the former WWII bomber airfield of Wickenby in Lincolnshire (between Lincoln and Skegness, post code for Sat Nav is LN3 5AX).
The airfield is owned by Stephen Turley & Gerry Cooper (whose son, Gerald, is currently British aerobatic champion and ranked 7th in the World Aerobatic Championships).
Gerry is also undertaking one of the most ambitious restorations in the UK – a Bristol Centaurus-engined Hawker Tempest II MW763/G-TEMT which is one of a cache of seven ex-Indian Air Force Tempests recovered from Poona in 1979 by Doug Arnold. It is now getting close to flight.
Arrivals by air will be strictly PPR with Wickenby on 01673 885000. All visitors should aim to be on site for 10.30am, for a tour of the Tempest restoration and various other vintage and classic aircraft, along with World War Two memorial collection and lunch in the HangAround Cafe/Bistro in the old Control Tower.
Numbers are needed in advance for catering, so please register your intent by FRIDAY 25th MARCH please either by e-mail to Carol de Solla Atkin at [email protected] or by phone or text message on 07974 013 828.
Please give your full name and mobile number, if possible, as it appears on the HAA membership register.
