‘BIGGLES BIPLANE’ OPEN HOUSE
Sywell Aerodrome, Northampton. Friday 27th November

Already the HAA Winter ‘Behind the Scenes’ tours are underway. Held approximately monthly, these get members ‘up close’ to aeroplanes and restoration projects that are not always on public view.

The first of these linked the past to the present. The ‘Biggles Biplane’ restoration team at Northampton’s Sywell aerodrome invited members to take a closer look at the restoration and winter maintenance programmes underway on from BE-2c and Fokker Triplane replicas, Tiger Moths, a Harvard and Miles Messenger.

The event was also combined with a ‘training day’ which allowed technicians from 2 Squadron RAF to compare their work on Tornado GR4s with the BE-2c, one of the types first operated by the squadron in 1914.

Some cynics might joke that the 30 year-old ‘Tonka’ airframe is itself assuming classic status. However a presentation on 2 Squadron’s current role in theatres such as Afghanistan left members in no doubt of the capability and firepower of the Tornado.

Once again the HAA event provided that fascinating link from the past to the present.
